One Day at a Time

The way we show up for our lives today and tomorrow has an enormous effect on who we will be and what we will be experiencing years from now. If we can remain fully engaged in the day at hand, enjoying all it has to offer and putting our energy into making the most of it, we will find that we are perfectly ready and capable to handle our future, whatever it brings.

If you can shift your focus from what may happen years down the line and return it to the day that is before you right now, you will find a measure of calm and renewed confidence in your capabilities. You may well also discover an inner faith that the future will take care of itself. 

Taking things one step at a time, rather than always looking at the bigger picture, makes life much easier to navigate. Our lives are much more manageable if we can experience them one day at a time. It helps to remember that we do not always need to completely understand what is happening right now, nor do we need to be able to predict the future. Most of us just want to find our way to being in harmony with whatever happens, and we can find this peace inside ourselves.

Throughout the ages, wise people have recognised that it is the simple things in life that have importance, beauty and value in them. Truth is simple and so, the more you live with simplicity, the nearer you come to the meaning of truth.

Natural rhythms guide all that we do – our very existence. Our breath and heartbeat are constant reminders of life’s pulsing rhythm that moves within and around us. These body rhythms are called circadian rhythms. These signal and affect every aspect of our life, for example, they govern when to wake up, to sleep, and to be active and they determine how much energy we have. Many people nowadays feel their lives are overly hectic or emotionally out of kilter, and are looking for ways to restore the balance.

If we allow ourselves to be thrown off balance by every piece of disturbing news that comes our way, we may be relying too much on our emotions. Sometimes our feelings and thoughts activate one another in a hectic way and then we become caught up in the confusion that surrounds us. It is difficult to achieve a state of calm in a tumultuous world, simply because life events have a tendency to overtake us. Indeed, sometimes, life is so frantic that I envisage it careering along like a dodgem car at the fair! However, if we can locate the stillness and tranquillity at the centre of our hearts, we can find composure in almost any situation.

This is particularly important when the world is in chaos, because it means that we can still retain our own inner peace and maintain a sense of serenity in a sea of unrest. The best way I know to do this, is through the practice of mindfulness. 

Mindfulness is not concerned with the past or the future; mindfulness bestows concentration on the here and now. It is the generation of energy which is completely living in every single moment. If we can learn to accept whatever arises in the present, we can also learn to allow this in others, too. When those around us know that we will be unruffled by whatever life has in store, then they will feel safe with us. By practising mindfulness on a daily basis, we continually return ourselves to the present. Awareness is key to finding peace within ourselves in an ever-changing, frantic world.  It exactly correlates to a living meditation.
